Sustainable Aviation Fuel has moved from an emerging concept to one of the aviation industry's most important pathways toward reducing emissions.

But ambition is currently moving considerably faster than supply.

Global SAF production is expected to reach approximately 2.4 million tonnes in 2026. Despite that growth, it would represent only around 0.8% of total aviation fuel consumption, according to IATA.

That gap reveals one of the biggest challenges facing sustainable aviation.

Airlines increasingly want access to SAF. Governments are developing policies to encourage its adoption, while ICAO has established a global aspirational vision aimed at reducing international aviation CO₂ emissions through greater use of cleaner aviation energy by 2030.

Yet expanding SAF requires more than demand. Production capacity, feedstock availability, financing, certification, transportation, storage, blending infrastructure, and airport distribution all have to scale together.

This means the next stage of SAF will be largely about accessibility.

For fuel suppliers, the challenge will increasingly be connecting operators with available SAF across a fragmented and rapidly developing global market.
